Usnea manage to find their place between the light and the dark, making full use of their arsenal and its capabilities. The album includes epic moments of grandeur, but also solitary ambient passages. Not having heard any of Usneas releases before, I sampled through their two previous full lengths. Based in Portland, Usnea is a blackened doom metal band with funeral doom and postmetal, and even a bit of stoner doom, thrown in. Much like the topics that it tackles, this album can be difficult to wrap your head around. However, taking the intellectual and sonic beating that this album gives you is worth it in the end.
